Beyrut, Lübnan’ın başkentidir. Nüfusu 1,5 milyonun üzerinde olan Beyrut, deniz etkisinden biraz korunan bir körfezin
kıyısındadır. Beyrut’ta tipik bir Akdeniz iklimi görülür. Uzun yıllar Orta Doğu’nun ekonomik, fikrî ve kültürel merkezi olan
Beyrut, 1970’lerden sonra başlayan toplumsal ve siyasal karışıklıklar ve bu yüzden patlayan Lübnan İç Savaşı (1975-
1991) sonucu bu özelliğini kaybetmiştir. Beyrut, Osmanlı döneminde planlı bir gelişme göstermişti. 1943’te Lübnan’ın
bağımsızlığını kazanmasından sonra gelişigüzel ve hızlı bir büyüme dönemine girmiştir. İç savaştan önce Beyrut nüfusu
içinde Hristiyan ve Müslümanların sayısı hemen hemen eşitti. Şimdi Müslümanlar çoğunlukta. Halkın büyük çoğunluğunu
meydana getiren Araplar, Lübnanlıları, Filistinli mültecileri, Suriyelileri ve başka göçmen Arap cemiyetleri de içine alır. En
büyük ve tek etnik azınlık Hristiyan Ermenilerdir. Ama Hristiyan Araplar gibi iç savaş yüzünden ve sonrasında sayıları göçle
azaldı ve azalmaya devam etmektedir. Beyrut’un doğusunda Hristiyanlar, batısında ise Müslümanlar çoğunluktadır. Eskiden
Müslüman topluluğun çoğunluğu Sünni iken 1960’lardan sonra göçler sonucu Şiilerin sayısı giderek artmıştır. Batı Beyrut’un
bazı bölümlerinde küçük Dürzi toplulukları da yaşar.
Beirut
Beirut is the capital of Lebanon. Beirut, with a population of over 1.5 million, is located on the edge of a gulf slightly protected from the
sea. A typical Mediterranean climate is seen in Beirut. Beirut, the economic, intellectual and cultural center of the Middle East for many
years, lost its character as a result of the social and political turmoil that began after the 1970s and the exploding Lebanese Civil War
(1975-1991). After the independence of Lebanon in 1943, it entered a period of random and rapid growth. Before the civil war, the number
of Christians and Muslims in the population of Beirut was almost equal. Now there is the majority of Muslims. The Arabs, which make up
the majority of the population, include Lebanese, Palestinian refugees, Syrians and other migrant Arab communities. The largest and
only ethnic minority is Christian Armenians. But like the Christian Arabs, because of, and after the civil war, the number of immigration has
decreased and continues to decline. There is the majority of Christians in the east of Beirut and Muslims in the west.
In the past, while the majority of the Muslim community was Sunni, the number of Shiites increased gradually after the 1960s. In some
parts of West Beirut, small Druse communities also exist.
